How to Benchmark Your Remote Bilingual Tutor Income: Data on $45/hr Baselines vs. $85/hr Specialized Immersion Test-Prep Rates

The gap between the two is real, but it is not a pay raise for the same work. It is a different product sold to a different buyer, and the platform you sell it on decides whether you can charge it.

Key Data

  • The median US tutor earned $19.27 an hour, or $40,090 a year, in May 2024, with the 90th percentile at $78,810, according to BLS data
  • Preply's Spanish tutors averaged about $16 an hour in August 2026, and Preply's own Spanish guide gives a $15 to $50 range
  • Wyzant's published average tutor price is $35 to $65 an hour, against a platform-wide range of $10 to $600
  • Experienced test-prep tutors charge $80 to $150 an hour, and test prep averages $65 to $150, according to TutorCruncher
  • DELE exam prep at Live Lingua starts at $32 an hour and falls to $27 on bulk hours, and Preply's TOEFL median is $22
  • An $85 lesson on Preply's highest 33% fee level still nets $56.95, more than a fee-free $45 lesson

Defining the $45 and $85 Benchmarks

There is no official rate for a remote bilingual tutor. The job covers conversation practice, homework help in a second language and exam coaching. Public data does not report "immersion test-prep" as a category either.

For this report, $45 is the baseline for an independent bilingual tutor selling to US clients. The $85 figure is the benchmark for specialized exam preparation: AP language exams, Seal of Biliteracy assessments and international tests such as DELE, TOEFL and IELTS. Both are editorial framings. We test them against the closest published data.

The government benchmark is low. BLS data puts the median hourly wage for tutors at $19.27 and the 75th percentile annual wage at $55,380. Those are employee wages, so they understate what independent tutors can charge, but they show how far a $45 or $85 rate sits above the typical paycheck.

What the Marketplaces Pay

Language marketplaces price well below the baseline.

Preply's Spanish tutors averaged about $16 an hour in August 2026, from listings reviewed by OnlineCourseing. Preply's own guide describes a $15 to $50 range and says exam preparation tutors will probably charge more than general lesson tutors. A Chalk Index analysis found a $22 median for tutors listing TOEFL on Preply.

Live Lingua's DELE exam preparation courses start at $32 an hour and fall as low as $27 when customers buy more hours. That is a language-exam product from a specialist provider, and it sits well under $45.

Wyzant prices higher because its buyers are mostly US families. FindMyGuru's June 2026 comparison puts the average tutor price at $35 to $65 an hour. Sacra notes that Preply works differently. It matches learners in high-cost markets with tutors in lower-cost ones, which pulls average rates down.

So $45 is above the typical language marketplace tutor and in line with the middle of the US-facing Wyzant range. To charge it consistently, a tutor usually needs US clients, a clear specialty or a private book of students.

Where $85 Shows Up

The $85 rate appears in test-prep pricing, not in conversation tutoring.

TutorCruncher puts average test-prep rates at $65 to $150 an hour and experienced professional rates at $80 to $150. Wise lists online SAT, ACT and GRE prep at $50 to $70 an hour. WealthVieu's tiers for private SAT and ACT tutoring run $50 to $75 for beginners, $75 to $125 for experienced tutors and $125 to $200 for premium tutors.

Private Prep's 2026 survey shows how wide the top is. SAT tutoring runs from $45 to more than $500 an hour, and elite specialists with documented results can charge $200 to $400 or more. Online sessions typically cost $10 to $25 less than in-person ones, and TutorCruncher adds 25% to 40% in high-cost states such as California, New York, Massachusetts and Washington.

The pattern is clear. Language-exam prep on global marketplaces sells at $22 to $32, while US test-prep tutoring starts around $50 and reaches $80 to $150 for experienced tutors. An $85 bilingual exam-prep rate is credible, but the market for it is US families buying results, not global learners buying practice.

What You Keep After Fees

The rate on your profile is not the rate in your pocket.

Sacra reports that Preply takes 100% of a tutor's first trial lesson and 18% to 33% of later lessons. WealthVieu and other tutor-income guides put Wyzant's commission at 25%. Private clients carry no platform fee, though payment processing and taxes still apply.

On those figures, a $45 lesson nets $36.90 at Preply's lowest fee, $33.75 on Wyzant and $30.15 at Preply's highest. An $85 lesson nets $69.70, $63.75 and $56.95. All of these are our calculations.

The important comparison is $85 at the worst fee against $45 at none. The first nets $56.95 and the second nets $45. At equal fees the $85 rate nets 89% more, so fees shrink both rates but do not erase the premium.

What It Adds Up To

Hourly rates only matter once they are multiplied by billed hours.

We modeled four schedules over 46 working weeks. At 15 billed hours a week, $45 an hour grosses $31,050 and $85 grosses $58,650. At 20 hours, the figures are $41,400 and $78,200. At 25 hours, they are $51,750 and $97,750.

Those results line up with the BLS data. Twenty hours at $45 comes close to the $40,090 median for tutors. Twenty hours at $85 comes close to the $78,810 90th percentile. In other words, an $85 tutor billing 20 hours a week grosses roughly what the top tenth of employed tutors earn.

Put another way, reaching $60,000 gross takes about 29 billed hours a week at $45 and about 15 hours at $85. A $68,000 target, the baseline in our companion report on dual-language educator pay, takes about 33 hours at $45 and 17 at $85. The model counts billed hours only. Prep, scheduling and marketing time come on top.

The Catch: Demand Is Large, but Proof Sets the Price

Exam-driven demand is large and growing.

In May 2025, 185,429 students took the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam, and 84.9% scored 3 or higher, according to College Board data. Arizona awarded 4,080 Seals of Biliteracy to graduating seniors in 2025-26, up from 3,281 the year before, a rise of about 24% by our calculation.

Most of those students already pass, so buyers pay a tutor for what a pass does not show: a 5, a Seal of Biliteracy or a score that unlocks college credit. Private Prep's survey ties the highest rates to documented results. A tutor who can show score gains earns more than one who can only show hours.

Format change adds a second opening. Fiveable reports that the College Board will move AP Spanish Language and Culture to a revised digital exam from the 2026-27 school year, which gives tutors who know the new format an advantage.

How to Benchmark Your Own Income

The steps below are an editorial guide based on the data above.

Calculate net hourly income, not the listed rate. Subtract platform fees and count the unpaid first trial lessons. Compare that figure with the net numbers in this report.

Track billed hours against total hours. A tutor billing 15 hours may work 25. Divide annual income by all hours worked to see the real wage, then compare it with BLS's $19.27 median.

Separate your channels. Track marketplace income and private income apart. If your private clients pay $75 and your marketplace clients pay $30, the blended rate hides which channel earns.

Price by exam, not by language. Language practice benchmarks at $16 to $45. An AP, DELE, TOEFL or Seal of Biliteracy prep package should be priced against test-prep rates of $65 to $150.

Document outcomes. Keep score reports, with permission, and track gains. Results are what move a tutor from the $50 to $75 tier toward $125 and above.

Read the Numbers With Care

Many of these figures come from tutoring companies and rate guides, not audited surveys. They have a commercial interest in the numbers and vary in method.

BLS data covers employed tutors. Independent tutors set their own prices and are not captured in the same way. The BLS figures here are national summaries from Wagedex, not state or metro detail.

Preply's average blends tutors across many countries and cost levels. It is not a US-only figure. Test-prep ranges are mostly for SAT, ACT and GRE, not for language exams, so they are an adjacent benchmark for the $85 tier.

The $45 and $85 benchmarks are editorial framings. The annual model assumes 46 working weeks and billed hours only, and shows gross income before fees, self-employment tax and expenses.

What to Watch Next

First, the AP Spanish format change. A new digital exam may create demand for tutors who know it before the market catches up.

Second, Seal of Biliteracy growth. Arizona's 24% jump in a year suggests more students are chasing language credentials.

Third, BLS wages. A May 2025 OEWS release, as summarized by Wagedex, puts the national tutor median at $43,350, up from $40,090. If that continues, the employed-tutor floor will move up.

The data supports one clear conclusion today: $45 an hour is a strong baseline for a remote bilingual tutor, and $85 is a credible specialist rate, but only for tutors who sell exam results to US buyers and keep their income out of low-priced marketplaces.
